Girls' Football Update

County Cup

This month saw the U14 Girls' football team travel to The Holt after school to play in the semi-final of the County Cup. It was a wet afternoon and we had to kick off within a few minute of arrival.

After a shaky 5 minutes at the start of the game the JMA ladies settled in and found their stride, controlling possession. This soon paid off, a cross from Taneeshae to Amie who was waiting in the middle, 0-1. The girls continued to look strong in possession of the ball with some excellent link up play through the middle with Hannah, Niamh and Amie. This did not stop The Holt having chances, but the strength of Shanelle (LB) and Natarica (CB) managed to keep two of their strongest players quiet, closing them down and calmly winning the ball every time. A great goal kick from Niamh, superbly controlled by Hannah, played into Amie with her back to goal. A moment of excellence with a fantastic turn allowed Amie to play the ball through cutting open the defence for Taneeshae to run on to and put in the back of the net, 0-2.

Half time, we were happy with how the performance was going, speaking about keeping control of the ball and clearing it out of the defensive area quickly. Unfortunately, within 5 minutes of the second half, we were down 3-2. The Holt managed to cut through our defensive quickly, playing the ball around the keeper and into the back of the net, a goal at the front post from a corner and a 20 yard strike from midfield. This rattled the JMA girls, however we composed ourselves and began to develop our own chance again. Whilst pushing forward in search for an equalising goal, we got caught by a long clearance over the top, The Holt striker controlled the ball exquisitely and set herself up for 4-2. At this point the JMA girls realised we had nothing to lose with some excellent encouragement coming from Niamh, the Captain and Taneeshae within a minute of The Holts 4th goal, Hannah managed to once again play a great ball into Taneeshae's feet who managed to turn and accelerate past the defense taking a long range shot which slid under the keeper and in to the back of the net, 4-3. With time running out we knew we had to go for it and push forward. We created a couple of chances but unfortunately time ran out and we were unable to find that equalising goal. The game ended The Holt 4 vs 3 JMA.

The Holt awarded Tanseeshae as Player of the Game and the Teachers Player of the Game went to Amie.

Although disappointed about the result, in all it was a great game. The girls showed great team work, determination and encouragement for one another, which was great to see from all involved. Unfortunate not to make the final, however a huge improvement individually (since joining teams outside of school) and as a team this season. The Holt congratulated the girls on the huge improvement over the season, since we had previously played. We look forward to the 18/19 season and say good luck to The Holt who play Maiden Erlegh in the Final.

Girls' Football Week

JMA celebrated the Girls' Football week sponsored by Disney from the 23rd to 27th April. For this, Berks and Bucks FA provided us with the funding to host a Year 3 & 4 girls tournament. This saw 7 schools bring teams to JMA for a fun filled afternoon of football matches, relays and Disney songs.

It was amazing to see so many young girls enjoying football and learning new skills along the way. Many of which it was the first time they had represented their schools or kicked a football competitively.

Thank you to the JMA Elite girls for officiating.
