Unified Basketball event

JMA were fortunate enough to host the first ever Unified Basketball Festival sponsored by Hasbro and run by special Olympics and the YST. Unified Basketball is when mainstream and special schools work together in one team to compete against other unified teams. In total there were 8 schools with over 70 pupils working together to compete and become the first winners of the event. Pupils not only had the opportunity to play basketball together but take part in fun games like pie face whilst they were off court. The event was a huge success with all gaining a great deal from the event and showing how inclusive sport can be; building friendships, confidence and having the chance to compete in a sports competition that these pupils may not usually have the opportunity to do.

A huge thank you must go to all the Sixth Form volunteers from the elite basketball team and the Reading Rockets players/staff that came down to run the events. Without these people the event would not have been the success that it was.

Well done to the 3 JMA pupils, Talia, Savannah and Ellie who took part in the event. Not only did they play well they were extremely helpful and supportive to all around them. Talia even walked away with one of the Inclusivity Awards of the day, with all receiving a Hasbro goody bag for their efforts.

We now look forward to the new year to continue to develop our unified relationship with Addington school and to continue to improve inclusivity and opportunities for all within sport.
