Careers Guidance & Advice

The purpose of careers advice and guidance at the John Madejski Academy is to provide effective and impartial careers education and guidance for every individual. Our aim is to enable our students to manage their own career development successfully, by helping them to acquire the skills, attitudes and abilities they will need to move through life with confidence.  This is achieved through a whole school approach as well as specific events planned and developed through our Careers Department. Students benefit from well-established links with the University of Reading as well as a wide range of businesses throughout the region. Whether the ultimate aim is university, a gap year, an apprenticeship or other work-based education, we will always promote the best interests of each individual student.

Careers Information and Guidance (CIAG) Information

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 guidelines about what makes the best careers provision in schools and colleges. The Careers Strategy at John Madejski Academy is built around them.

Description

1. A stable careers programme

Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by pupils, parents, teachers and employers.

2. Learning from labour market information

Every pupil, and their parents, should have access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.

3. Addressing the needs of each pupil

Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

5. Encounters with employers and employees

Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.

6. Experiences of workplaces

Every pupil should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.

7. Encounters with further and higher education

All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.

8. Personal guidance

Every pupil should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all pupils but should be timed to meet their individual needs.

 

Three Strands of Support

John Madejski Academy has split Careers, Information and Guidance into three strands:

  • Curriculum
  • Internal Guidance
  • External Guidance

 

Curriculum

Citizenship Years 7-9

All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have one hour of Citizenship per week. We aim to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. In particular our citizenship education should foster pupils’ keen awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. Teaching should equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It should also prepare pupils to take their place in society as responsible citizens, manage their money well and make sound financial decision (abridged from KS3 National Curriculum) In addition to this careers information and guidance are delivered throughout the schemes of learning.

ICT Years 7-9 (spring term)

A scheme of learning based around an online careers information programme is covered in IT lessons from January until February half term. In addition to the CIAG guidance this provides students will also cover IT skills including: web design and inserting hyperlinks.

Our careers education programme offers 3 on-line guidance packages; Kudos, Career Pilot and e-clips. Each programme offers a careers guidance and investigation focus but with different methods of interaction, presentation and content. Both Kudos and Career Pilot enable teachers to develop lesson content and to track student use. Both meet Gatsby benchmark criteria in all 8 categories. Both are free of charge to the school.

Tutor Time Year 10, 11, 12 and 13

All students follow a Careers Information and Guidance Programme in the Spring Term. This is delivered 2 mornings a week by Tutors.

Subject Specific

Subjects are asked to ensure that career pathways specific to subjects are investigated throughout the year within their teaching so that no opportunities are missed.

External Guidance

John Madejski Academy works with a range of external partners to provide impartial careers advice and guidance. As well as our internal careers advice programme JMA uses Adviza to offer additional impartial careers advice to our year 11 students. Adviza helps to support young people and others, at important times in their lives where key decisions need to be made. JMA also regularly works with the following organisations: The University of Reading, Study Higher, Price Waterhouse Waterhouse Cooper, CGI, JP Morgan, Learning to Work, The National Citizen Service, Reading College, Reading Youth Parliament, Aspire 2, Young Professionals UK.
