Tutor Time Reading Programme
At Hartland High School, we see reading as a powerful skill that opens doors to opportunity, creativity, and lifelong learning. Our Tutor Time Reading Programme (TTRP) is designed to nurture a genuine love of books by giving students access to stories that are engaging, enjoyable, and thought-provoking.
Each morning, every student (except for Year 11) take part in TTRP during tutor time. Tutors read aloud with clarity and expression, while students follow along with their own copy of the book. This shared experience not only strengthens literacy and vocabulary but also ignites curiosity and excitement about stories. We choose books with rich plots and memorable characters, so students are motivated to keep reading both in school and at home.
To encourage students to read widely, we often select books that form part of a series. This way, students can continue their reading journey independently once a text has been completed in school. Tutors also pause to clarify challenging words and ideas, helping students grow in confidence and develop a deeper understanding of what they read.
As with all aspects of school life here, TTRP is delivered in a calm, focused, and disruption-free environment, ensuring that every student has the space to fully immerse themselves in the joy of reading.
Our reading programme is diverse and inclusive, carefully chosen to reflect a broad range of voices, cultures, and perspectives while complementing the wider curriculum. Over the course of the year, Year 7 students typically read four or five core texts, mixing classic stories with contemporary adventures.
Some of the Year 7 texts include:
-
Boy 87
-
The House of Silk
-
Journey to the River Sea
-
Northern Lights
-
The Goldfish Boy
