Not the start of a joke, it actually happened; and the result is the Reset Hub, providing support for students and staff at JMA. The Reset Hub Team is led by two local youth work charities Shift Youth + Community and Learn4Life with trained volunteers from the community.
Here’s how it all started: for about 6 years Learn4Life were running a faith discovery club during lunch times and serving coffee and cake to staff each Thursday, then SYC got involved and we joined ‘family lunches’ with the year sevens and Lunch Time With A Difference clubs (LTWAD). Eventually we connected with Adam Tombs and started running interactive personal development skills with students a couple of times a week. It seemed that our Re:Start program would be ideal for some of the older students so last year we ran a 16 week program in partnership with the Reading Borough Council Parks and Green Spaces team. Each Thursday we headed off to Prospect Park for a 9.15 start with hot chocolate, toast and pancakes to start the day; the program included practical horticulture and personal development with a hot lunch provided by members of the Whitley community. Two of the students did so well they went on to be offered apprenticeships with RBC!
That brings us to September this year when we were provided with a space at JMA.. Our work with the AP team during Re:Start indicated that if we were able to provide more consistent support, this would be very welcome. We shared the vision with our Reading networks and within 10 days individuals and churches had donated approximately £1500 to set up the Reset Hub. Claire (the doctor) and Anika (the reverend) lead in supporting staff and students in Alternative Provision; this includes implementing Restorative Approaches in the unit. Andrea (the teacher), leads in supporting staff and students across the academy, this includes break- time duty, LTWAD, Coffee and Cake in the staff room on a Thursday and RE lesson support.
We look forward to giving you regular updates and meeting you at parent events.
